I was trained as a makeup artist at AVEDA NYC. I was exposed to the harmful chemicals found in many of the cosmetic products we use each day to make us more beautiful. These chemicals can be present in your body for a long time and could cause health problems. One of the most questionable of these chemicals is parabens.
What are the parabens?
Parabens are chemical compounds that are used as preservatives in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics and also in food and beverage processing. There are four main types: methyl-ethyl, 脫毛 – https://www.evrbeauty.com/ propyl, propyl and butyl parabens. You can find these on the label of your favorite products and then replace them with something that is more efficient. Parabens are believed to be endocrine disruptors as well as reproductive poisons. This is a more complex question.
Why should I take note of this?
Since endocrine disruptors and toxins are chemicals that disrupt hormones and interfere with normal growth and development of reproductive and intelligence capabilities. The average woman in the U.S. uses around 12 products for personal care each day, while the average teenager can use up to 17! Even if you use only just a few of these items, that’s a lot of harmful chemicals entering your body each day. Imagine the effects this could be over the course of a lifetime of makeup use. You might think you are safe because cosmetics are put on your body. Be aware that when you apply anything on your body (i.e. Makeup, lipstick, glitter and the like), they are going into your body.
Why do I have parabens in my make-up when they’re so hazardous?
Many people believe that a government agency, like the FDA, regulates what goes into your makeup. If you can purchase a product at your local department store or pharmacy it is safe. However, this is not always the case. Cosmetics are not subject to any government regulation. The U.S. government does not require companies to conduct safety tests or health studies of cosmetics. Companies can make use of any chemical they wish in your makeup. They don’t even need to disclose the chemicals they employ.
What can I do for my family’s security?
Read the labels carefully – but keep in mind that not all ingredients need to be listed on the label of cosmetics. If a product is free of parabens it will declare it and is an achievement that cosmetic companies are proud of and they will show it off! Also, keep in mind that claims like “organic”, “natural” or “dermatologist tested” are not controlled for use on cosmetics and do not mean products are safe. Do your research and refuse to use or buy cosmetics or personal care products that contain dangerous chemicals.
As a cosmetics designer for cheerleaders, dancers and actors, I am especially concerned about the health of the children and teens who are using and adore my cosmetics! Teens who are prepubescent or pubescent are at a higher risk of exposure to these chemicals. The goal of JAM was always to create a safer cosmetic option for cheerleaders, dancers, actors or performers, or anyone else who needs a durable makeup WITHOUT all of the “long lasting chemical”. This is why I am pleased to announce that, since the fall of 2009, JAM cosmetics is PARABENS FREE!
