While I was a makeup artist at AVEDA in NYC I was taught about the nasty chemicals that go into many of the cosmetic products that we use every day to look better. These chemicals can remain in your body for a long time after you’ve removed your makeup and can cause all kinds of issues. One of the most questionable of these chemicals is parabens.
What are parabens?
Parabens are chemical compounds that are used as preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and also in the processing of food and beverages. There are four main kinds: methyl-ethyl and propyl parabens. You can search for these on the label of your favourite products and replace them with something more efficient. The more complex solution is that parabens are believed by many to be endocrine disruptors and reproductive toxicants.
Why should I take note of this?
Endocrine disruptors or reproductive toxins are chemicals that alter hormones and hinder normal growth and development. The average woman in the U.S. uses around 12 personal care products a day and the average teenager could use as much as 17! If all of these products contain parabens, even in small amounts, 激光脫毛 – https://upardigital.uparsistem.edu.co/stunning-bridal-dress/ that is lots of toxic chemicals that enter your body each day. Imagine the impact this could affect your skin over the duration of your lifetime of makeup application. You may think that you are safe since cosmetics are put on your body. Don’t be fooled – when you put anything on your body (i.e. lipstick, makeup, glitter, etc) it is going into your body.
If parabens can be so harmful, why are they in my makeup?
Many people believe that the FDA regulates makeup. It is generally believed that if the product can be purchased at a local drugstore or departmental store, it should be safe. This is not always the situation. There is very little government regulation of cosmetics. The U.S. government does not require companies to conduct safety testing or studies on the health of cosmetics. Companies can make use of any chemical they wish in your cosmetics. They don’t have to disclose the chemicals they employ.
What can I do to safeguard my family?
Check labels – however, not all ingredients must be listed on cosmetics. If it’s paraben-free, it will state that and is an achievement that cosmetic companies are proud of and will boast about it! Be aware that claims such as “organic” or natural or dermatologist-tested aren’t allowed in cosmetics. This does not mean that the product is safe. Do your homework and avoid to purchase or use personal care or cosmetic products containing these questionable chemicals.
As a cosmetics designer for dancers, cheerleaders, and actors, I am especially concerned regarding the health of the children and teens who use and love my cosmetics! Pre-pubescent and teen-aged teens are particularly vulnerable to the dangers from exposure to these harmful chemicals. My goal at JAM was always to create a safer cosmetic option for 激光脫毛 – https://www.evrbeauty.com/ cheerleaders, dancers, actors or any other person who wants a long lasting makeup product that isn’t contaminated with “long lasting chemical”. I am excited to announce that JAM’s cosmetics will be PAABENS-FREE as of Fall 2009.
